Stroyka ¹43, 2012: World’s Leading Expert on Composite Reinforcement Materials Spoke at ROSNANO
november 6, 2012
The event was organized by Russian developer and manufacturer of composite materials Galen LLC (project company of RUSNANO, JSC) supported by the Educational and Infrastructure Programs Fund. Brahim Benmokrane is the Professor of the Department of the Civil Engineering at the University of Sherbrooke (Canada), the Director of the National Research Institute for modern composites for infrastructure and innovative materials for concrete reinforcement, who managed the development of standards on composite reinforcement materials in the USA and Canada.
Complete information on composite reinforcement application in construction structures abroad, current standards, design and test procedures and real objects which are in operation for 15 years (bridges, parking, industrial objects, roads, etc.) were presented during the 5 hour seminar. Evgeny Nikolaev, the Deputy General Director of Galen, stressed in his speech the timeliness of the event. “Currently composite reinforcement materials are enjoying an increasing demand in Russia: the builders are actively using them instead of steel, while new manufacturers are rapidly entering the market. However there are no state standards on quality of products manufactured in Russia,” – says Evgeny. “With no clear understanding of existing restrictions on product use and calculation methods the future of composite reinforcement is threatened. One of the solutions is to refer to Western experience. The USA and Canada, for instance, developed state standards on these products; vast majority of projects in bridge, road and industrial construction were successfully implemented there. Therefore we invited the leading expert of the field from North America who is responsible for research of composite reinforcement materials and what is more important implementation of real projects involving them.” According to E.Nikolaev, the purpose of the event was not only to get practical information, but also to discuss the future of composite reinforcement materials in Russia with all the parties concerned. It was agreed to continue this discussion together with standardization bodies, state authorities and designers.
